There are a tremendous number of web sites that are devoted to genealogy, many of them designed to help you with your research. We suspect from the number of visitors they get, this is old news, but for those who are just getting started with research on the web, we have listed a few of our favorites below.

• www.genealogytoolbox.com – A very useful web site whose home page directs you to seven different sites. Matthew and April Helm, authors of the book "Genealogy Online for Dummies" have developed either themselves, or in conjunction with others, the following sites:
  • www.bookstore.genealogytoolbox.com – As they say, "One-stop shopping for genealogy books."
  • www.onlinegenealogy.com – Their Journal of Online Genealogy, a monthly web magazine focuses on the use of online resources and techniques in genealogy and family history.
  • www.genealogynews.genalogytoolbox.com – Genealogy news stories found on the web.
  • www,query.genealogytoolbox.com – A place to post research questions.
  • www,registration.genealogytoolbox.com – Allows users to register their genealogy site.
  • www,sitefinder.genealogytoolbox.com – Links with full descriptions of over 70,000 genealogically-related internet sites.
  • www,genalogysoftware.genealogytoolbox.com – Again, according to them, one-stop shopping for software.
• www.genealogyportal.com – Eight separate search engines to assist you in researching your family history.
• www.cyndislist.com – A web site that links to over 70,000 other genealogy web sites. Cyndislist.com was prominently mentioned in the April 19, 1999 issue of Time Magazine in an article entitled, "How to Map Your Heritage."
• www.familyhistory.org – The web site of the LDS Church. The library in Salt Lake City claims to have records on over 2 Billion people.
• www.ancestry.com – Claiming to be the "No. 1 source of family history online," it looks to live up to the hype. Another very useful site!
• www.rootsweb.com – Recently merged with MyFamily.com (aka Ancestry.com), its surname list now contains over 700,000 family names.
• www.genealogy.com – Another great all-purpose site.
