How to lay out your book

When it is time to start the production phase of your book, you may find yourself wondering what to do. Like a wedding, there are a few rules you shouldn't break, but after that, it's a matter of personal taste. However, for those authors who want the traditional way to lay out a book, we offer the following:

  • The list of the pages that go in the front and back of the book
  • The size the margins should be to give the book an uncluttered look. (It's easy to forget about the gutter, the white space between facing pages when the book is open. Too little here and the print is down in the fold.)
  • The best type style and size
Binding your book

We also offer a discussion on the two methods most commonly used to bind a genealogy book: perfect binding (paperback novel style) and hardcase binding (hardback). Next to photographs, the book's binding is the best investment to ensure a high-quality product. In particular, hardcase binding can be the icing on the cake, although both methods have their pluses and minuses. We feel we have the best prices and craftsmanship available.
